Workplan for the first grant period (May 1st, 2010 - April 30, 2011)

Objectives

Two main tasks will be carried out during the first grant period:

Task 1: Reviewing relevant initiatives
Action participants will review existing and emerging research in the fields being investigated, including and extending beyond their immediate interests. The ultimate purpose of this exercise will be to identify (i) avenues of research that will really advance the agenda of audience research, (ii) opportunities for new approaches and cross-disciplinary developments, and (iii) possibilities of cooperation with other research networks and programmes (including relevant COST Actions).

Task 2: Defining a concerted research agenda
The second task will consist of developing a well-focused concerted research agenda. Participants will take into consideration the research needs and opportunities previously identified (cf. task 1), as well as their specific research interests and the projects they are (or plan to be) engaged in. Special attention will also be devoted to familiarisation with the needs and the interests of non-scientific target groups such as policy makers and cultural industries.

Activities

The activities planned in the first grant period will provide the participants with opportunities to get informed about each other's research projects and to define a common and challenging research agenda.

Short-term scientific missions (STSM)

Up to two STSM grants will be awarded, preferably to early-stage researchers who would like to develop or implement innovative approaches to audiences in collaboration with scholars from another country.

MC meetings

The management committee (MC) will meet at least two times during the first grant period in order to ensure the long-term planning and the overall coordination of the project. The MC will also make the strategically crucial decisions regarding the scientific programme and the dissemination plan, and supervise the WG activities. The first meeting of the MC was held in Brussels, on March 1st 2010. The second meeting of the MC will be held in Lisbon, on November 12, 2010.

WG meetings

The first meeting of the Working Groups (WGs) will be held in Lisbon, on November 11-13, 2010 (local organiser: Paula Cordeiro, ISCSP). The plenary sessions will contribute to the establishment of a common research atmosphere and facilitate the coordination between WGs regarding the topics to be investigated. The separate meetings of the WGs will aim at strengthening the connection between WG members and reviewing extensively relevant research initiatives (cf. task 1). The WGs will also familiarize themselves with the needs and interests of the non-academic target groups of the Action (i.e. industries and professionals, policy makers and regulatory bodies, NGOs and citizen initiatives). As a result of their work, each WG will establish a provisional research agenda, identifiying, for instance, vital issues that need to be addressed and potential theoretical or methodological developments (cf. task 2). The full programme of the first WG meeting is available in the section "Events".

Action conference

The first Action conference (AC) will be held in Zagreb, on April 7-9, 2011 (local organiser: Jelena Jurisic, University of Zagreb). Its objectives will be to develop connections between the WGs, to feed the reviewing work with inputs from a wide range of relevant research projects and interests (cf. task 1), and to expand the Action’s network.

Outputs

Newsletter

The newsletter will focus on past and future activities of the Action, as well as on the key achievements of the WGs (e.g. publications).

Action website

The website will consist of two areas: a public and an internal area. The public area primarily aims to disseminate up-to-date information to the target groups and to attract persons to join the network. The internal area will focus on the communication among members of the network.

Essays

Action participants and selected authors (e.g. industry representatives, policy makers, regulatory body officers) will publish short and concise essays about audience and reception studies.
