Abstract: This paper is focused on educational ICT policies in Portugal in the last years (2005-2010) and their impact among Portuguese children. In order to simultaneously provide a broader view of the context and results, it includes comparative information with Poland and other European countries. This comparison is possible mainly because of the availability of data from the EU Kids Online Project in which both countries have been participating since 2006. In this network of European researchers, the relation between Portugal and Poland is particularly close since in 2006-2007 both countries participated in a preliminary comparative research producing national reports and analyzing the existent research on children and the internet (Hasebrink et al, 2007). In 2010, the EU Kids Online Project concluded a European survey in 25 countries which involved more than 25.000 children who have already used the internet and one of their parents. The results of this survey have been explored in different levels, one being the country as a unity of analysis. Therefore, contextual information was also collected on the 25 countries, from demographic, socioeconomic or cultural indicators to those on digital penetration. This is the reason why this paper not only presents the Portuguese policy on ICT in education but also includes contextual information and data from that survey. Because we have learnt so much with this method of working together in a European network, we hope that this option also contributes to enrich the discussion making visible similarities and differences between the two countries and possible implications for ICT policies on education.
