Domains of digital literacy learning: beyond easy oppositions
Drotner, K. (2011). Domains of digital literacy learning: beyond easy oppositions . Zagreb conference: "New challenges and methodological innovations in European media audience research". 7-9 April 2011.
Abstract: In current educational discourses on digital literacy, there is an opposition between what may be termed a formal and an informal (or semi-formal) position. Proponents of the formal position argue for school as a key lever of learning, inc. learning of digital literacies (e.g. Leander & Sheehy 2004); while proponents of the informal position argue for out-of-school domains as important and under-valued learning sites, not least when it comes to digital learning processes (e.g. Nespor 1997, Coffield 2000). Based on results from ongoing studies on learning at digital, cultural heritage sites, the presentation calls for a more holistic approach to digital learning processes and lays out some of the key strategic challenges ahead to meet this goal.
