Whispers of the global democracy and the screams of the ‘voice of the voiceless’: The case of clean clothes campaign in Turkey
Turkoglu, N. (2011). Whispers of the global democracy and the screams of the ‘voice of the voiceless’: The case of clean clothes campaign in Turkey. Not listed..
Abstract: One of the crucial components for citizen participation in a democracy is the right to communicate. Diffractions in the global media make evident that there are voiceless people in the proximity and it is unbearable just to be the spectator of the people who suffer. This paper aims to open up a discussion on the promises of the global democracy, focusing on the appearances of the global awareness campaigns for the people who need help to survive. For whom and from where the agendas are built up in the campaigns that take place on the global media, depend very much on the economics and the political purposes of the actions. The example of the case of urgent calls for clean clothes has some positive results on the public awareness of the sandblasted denim workers in Turkey. In this case, the supporters of the campaign were sensitive not to victimise the people who suffer unlike the calls for donations in other global campaigns.
