The visibility of the radio: friend or foe?
Jurisic, J., Jergovic B. (2013). The visibility of the radio: friend or foe?. Radio Research 2013: Radio, the Resilient Medium.
http://radioresearch2013.sunderland.ac.uk/Abstract: Owing to the technological revolution and media convergency, radio has become not only an audio medium, but a visual one as well. Video streaming of radio program in Croatia is present from the end of last year. It is too early to talk about its impact or significance yet, however, its appearance motivated us to research the relationship of the potential audience , journalists and editors and the new way of broadcasting and following the radio program. The research was conducted on a sample of 30 students from the School of Media and Social Culture Studies of the University of Dubrovnik and the School of Communication Sciences of the University of Zagreb, and 30 journalists and editors of Croatian radio. First we presented to them 3 radio shows which are broadcast in video stream on Croatian television 4, after which they filled out the survey based on 13 questions. Although students do not follow the radio shows via video streaming most of them thinks that they can bring a new radio audience. Journalists are skeptical towards the image as a new characteristic radio emission, but are less critical of their visual impairments. All respondents believe that video streaming can attract viewers by allowing them to peek through the screen in a radio studio and see how you are doing radio shows.
