Digital literacy and teachers’ and peers’ mediation in supporting online opportunities Cristina Ponte
Ponte, C. (2012). Digital literacy and teachers’ and peers’ mediation in supporting online opportunities Cristina Ponte. EUCUNet Conference Oporto 2012.
Abstract: In 2010, the EU Kids Online network led by Sonia Livingstone (LSE, UK) conducted a cross-national survey in 25 European countries, focused on the online access and practices lived by European children (9-16). Funded by the Safer Internet Program, a special attention of this survey was given to risky experiences and how children are able to cope with them or, on the contrary, live harmful situations. As the online risk doesn´t exist in a vacuum, separated from the offline context, it is relevant to know how children construct their ability to deal with risky and unexpected situations. Digital literacy and mediation received from parents, teachers and peers do affect their online practices which occur mainly in informal and individualized environments. Aiming to contribute to the debate on European and national policies on Education, this keynote will present results on digital literacy and on social mediation, from teachers and peers, emerging from this pan-European survey. The presentation will include also information on the available resources provided by the EU Kids Online network.
