Abstract: This article presents how Portuguese news magazines reported issues related to young people (15-35 years) and their vocational choices and employment from 2000 to 2008. The analysis is framed by the Portuguese context in those years, introducing values concerning employment and work experience, and it also introduces the news magazine’s style and its particular proximity to female readers. The choice of leader magazines targeted to different social groups and the focus on long time made visible distinctive discourses: the continued attention to mobility and social mobility in the popular magazine; the sudden awareness of the problem of youth unemployment when it started to affect "their children", in magazines oriented to the middle classes.
